There were celebrations and commiserations for the British teams in the UEFA cup last night with Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspurs progressing to the next stage while Everton and Motherwell were dumped out of the competition. Villa booked their place in the group stages after a 1-1 draw with Litex Lovech and a 4-2 win on aggregate.

Chelsea were held to a goalless draw away to Romanian champions CFR Cluj in last night's Champions League tie. Striker Didier Drogba had a frustrating game and was stretchered off with what appeared to be a serious injury in the second half.

Arsenal got their home campaign in the Champions League off to a fantastic start with a comfortable 4-0 win over Porto, with braces from Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor. Van Persie slid in to convert Adebayor's cross and open the scoring. The Dutchman's corner was headed in by Adebayor making it 2-0.
